I know we’re all covered up with protective masks right now but can we talk about the skin behind those masks. For me, the winter season not only brought colder temps but also dry skin to match. So, I’ve learned it’s a must to switch up my skincare routine during the winter. It’s also the first month of 2021 and a new year offers a chance to hit reset right? Why not switch up your skincare routine?
Usually my routine is pretty simple and looks like face wash, toner, and a great moisturizer with SPF. There’s actually nothing wrong with that, but this year, my skincare goals have changed since it’s been so neglected behind my mask. My skin is sensitive and usually very dry and flaky during the winter so my skincare products of choice target those problems for me. I’ve had to incorporate other tools into my skincare routine too, because the pandemic created so many restrictions when it comes to beauty services at a spa.
Now, my New Year – New Skincare Routine looks like:
Step 1
I start with a good exfoliating scrub product like Tula Skincare’s So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub to get rid of any oil from makeup wipes and buildup. The sugar particles are gentle yet effective enough to get rid of any clogged pores that’s holding you back from skin-perfection. Although, I only use it 2-4x a week, it adds an extra treat to my glow-up goals. Note: I got it in an Ipsy bag once and never looked back.
Step 2
Next, I cleanse as usual. My go-to cleansing system since last summer has been Rihanna’s Fenty Skin products. Every time I use the cleanser (Total Cleans’r) my skin feels like what I assume heaven feels like.
I love using a cleansing towel to get a deep clean in the morning, but I usually just wash with my hands and keep it moving.
Step 3
I’ve recently started using the Sonic Refresher from Michael Todd Beauty, a wet/dry sonic microderm + pore extraction system. And I absolutely love what it does for my skin! It’s the first thing I grab right after I cleanse and before I apply my toner.
It’s like getting a top notch, deep clean facial from your favorite spa right in your hands. And with this pandemic, it is such a relief to be able to take care of my skin at home instead of spending extra money on expensive facial treatments.
The 3-speed setting allows you to customize your treatment based on your skin & comfort level. While the suction works together with the diamond microdermabrasion treatment targeting those areas that you want to purify, creating a smooth & rejuvenated skin surface for a flawless makeup application. And don’t worry – it’s quick, easy, and painless.
Step 4
Toners & Serums
After cleansing, always apply water based products first, then oil based serums. Fortunately for me, the Fenty Skin Fat Water is a toner serum combo that targets pores, improves the look of dark spots, brightens, smooths, and fights shine — Basically it is DOES IT ALL!
A toner pretty much helps you get the last bit of impurities off your skin. Then I grab my Vitamin C serum of choice – BeautyStat’s Universal C Skin Refiner. It’s perfect for brightening your complexion, refining your skin’s texture and it’s BLACK-OWNED.
Why do I use Vitamin C on my face?
Contrary to popular belief, even if you feel like you’re getting vitamin C in your diet, it may not be going to your skin. So this is where the serum form of Vitamin C comes in. I use it on my skin BEFORE I put on moisturizer.
If you have dark circles under your eyes like me, give them extra love with BeautyStat’s Universal C Eye Perfector.
Step 5
Last but not least, it’s time to moisturize.
I am a groupie for a good face moisturizer. You can not skip this step in your skincare routine. Not to sound thirsty, but you have to give your skin the hydration it needs! My OG favorite will always be Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion as it has kept my face hydrated through those harsh Colorado winters that I hated to love. But lately, I’ve been using the Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer because it has SPF30 and my skin loves it.
Remember, with all skincare products, consistency is definitely key. You have to remember to stick to the plan even on those lazy days, sis. It takes time to see the changes, but sticking to a skincare routine is the best way to reap the benefits.
